A shrub; stems pilose and densely prickly, the prickles slender and curved, up to 4 mm long.
Leaves thinly coriaceous, broadly cordate-orbicular, 5–8 cm long, 4.5–9 cm wide, shallowly 5-lobed, obtuse to shortly acute at apex, broadly cordate and 5-nerved at base, unevenly serrate, upper surface nearly glabrous but hirsute along the nerves, lower surface yellowish brown, tomentose and with long hairs, nerves slightly impressed to flat above, prominent beneath; petioles 5–8 cm long, long hairy and with many prickles; stipules ovate to ovate-oblong in outline, 6–12 mm long, deeply pinnatipartite or laciniate, with few long hairs outside and on the margin, glabrous inside.
Flower 3–6 in axillary racemes; pedicels about 5 mm long; bracts orbicular-ovate, laciniate, outside puberulent, inside glabrous; calyx cupular, outside densely tomentose and hirsute, inside tomentose; calyx-lobes oblong-ovate, 5–8 mm long, apically 1–3-bristled; petals orbicular, about 5 mm long, glabrous; stamens glabrous; pistils glabrous, style up to 7 mm long.
